What is Spin Rate?

Spin Rate, measured in Revolutions Per Minute (RPM), indicates how fast the golf ball is rotating backwards.

RPM calculates the number of rotations in 1 minute.

(Note*: The ball’s curve is a result of the Spin Rate and it’s direction which is known as the Spin Axis. The Spin Rate, the Spin Axis and the ball’s air time will determine whether the ball will fade or draw and how much.)

Decrease your Spin, Increase your Distance

Do you generate too much spin? Reducing your spin rate will lead to an increase in roll distance, making you hit longer drives.

To decrease your spin:

  • Focus on increasing your attack angle (Increasing Attack Angle = Less Spin)
  • Decrease your loft. (Decreasing Dynamic Loft = Less Spin & Lower Launch)

Caution** Decreasing your loft will decrease your Launch Angle.

Do not decrease the loft on your driver if your launch angle is already under 31 degrees. Having an optimal launch angle is the main priority to hitting longer drives.

With irons, we advise players to optimize for control and not for distance, as decreasing your spin rate could be counterproductive.
